Synopsis
Sugar is a provocative, challenging and bizarrely funny coming-of-age love story between Cliff, a restless teen living in the suburbs, and Butch, a street hustler. Butch challenges Cliff's sheltered upbringing by exposing him to a different world that changes Cliff forever.

Sugar follows Cliff, a restless suburban teen who on the eve of his 18th birthday takes the subway downtown armed with a subway token, a skateboard and a joint.

During his trip downtown Cliff meets, and is instantly attracted to, Butch, a street hustler. He is quickly introduced to downtown living. Cliff meets extravagant characters like Stanley, a man who enjoys "interesting activities" with young hustlers, and a pregnant drug dealer. Cliff gets a lesson in the world of drugs, boozecans, and sex.

Cliff in turn introduces Butch to his world, which includes Cliff's liberal mother, Madge and his sister, Cookie. Cookie is 12 (though well beyond her years), talkative, hyper-perspective and just plain hyper. She's fascinated by Butch and would love to see him begin a relationship with her brother. The two boys develop a friendship that slowly turns into a romance, but the notion of intimacy is foreign to both of them.

Over time, we see each boy become transformed by the influence of the other. Butch's crazy drug addicted life becomes too much for Cliff and the two boys part company to tragic results...
